Mark Hayward
Mark Hayward was born in 1979. From 2003-7 he studied at the University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury (formerly KIAD) where he received a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art. He went on to complete an MA in Fine Art Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London in 2007-9. At his postgraduate degree show he was a recipient of the Tim and Belinda Mara Award.
In 2009, Hayward’s animation Air-raid was selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize Exhibition, which toured to further venues in the UK.
Hayward uses his faceless yet familiar characters to access and explore human situations. With an ever-present sense of humour and a personal tone, his images have the feeling of illustrated moments, moments in which the characters react to their surroundings, tempering the strange and unusual with the ordinary and everyday and mediating violence and aggression with slapstick humour.
It is the comic familiarity of these endearing characters that gives Hayward’s work its inclusivity, allowing us access to his world. Whether interacting with fairground attractions or weapons of war they offer us a fresh perspective on familiar scenes.
